Woodlawn Manor - Alexandria, VA
Woodlawn Manor, aka Woodlawn, may be tiny but it’s loaded with some very choice and notable real estate. This charming community is a subdivision on Mount Vernon and is located in the southern reaches of Alexandria. The community is also located just north of Yacht Haven along the bay of Dogue Creek, right where it joins with the Potomac River.
Woodlawn Manor is known to architecture aficionados as the site of two very noteworthy properties. The Woodlawn Plantation is a grand brick Georgian mansion that was once part of George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate, while the Pope-Leighey House is an L-shaped modernist dwelling built by the iconic designer Frank Lloyd-Wright. The latter property originally existed in Falls Church before being moved to the Woodlawn Plantation site.
But the little neighborhood is more than just history. During the late 1940s a new era of residential development began. The bulk of construction would take place over the next 15 years, producing an interesting blend of styles similar to other nearby neighborhoods of that era. You’ll find brick Ramblers and cottages, Colonia Revivals in both clapboard and brick, Cape Cods and some split-levels. There has also been a number of recently built homes, especially along the water. Prices in Woodlawn Manor can range from the mid-$600s to over $3 million.
This is an enclave in the purist sense of the word, surrounded by the verdant greenery of the Mount Vernon Country Club and Grist Mill Park on three sides and the Dogue Creek bay on the other. As a result, the actually space dedicated to residential development is limited to a handful of neatly platted streets. The George Washington Memorial Parkway runs through the neighborhood, hugging the coastline as it proceeds north, thus allowing a pleasant commute to Old Town, Arlington and Washington DC.
With golf, tennis, boating and wonderful historical landmarks, Woodlawn Manor is one of Alexandria’s true residential gems. But due to its small size, active listings for homes for sale can be scarce. That said, there are often a number of available high-end properties along Mount Vernon’s immediate waterfront.
Residents of Woodlawn Manor have an easy commute into other parts of Alexandria or Washington DC. Simply hop on Richmond Highway or the George Washington Memorial Parkway coastal route. With its wealth of landmarks and local amenities, this is a great place to seek out luxury real estate.
