Waynewood - Alexandria, VA

Nestled along the Potomac River in southern Alexandria is the attractive waterfront community of Waynewood. With approximately 3,360 residences, this mid-century subdivision of Fort Hunt has a well-organized sense of civic pride along with great local amenities. Homes for sale are primarily priced in a comfortable mid-to-high six figure range, although there are a few properties crossing the seven-figure threshold.

Waynewood is part of Fairfax County as well as the greater Alexandria area. It is also south of the neighborhoods of Collingwood and Snowden. This part of the Potomac coastline is rich with history and was once home to George Washington’s sprawling land holdings. The nation’s first president had five large plantations spread out throughout the area including River Farm where our profile community now exists.  But despite the presence of a few remaining historic homes, Waynewood didn’t really come of age until the post-World War II era.

The 1950s were a time of growth and prosperity, across the nation and certainly in the Washington Metropolitan area. Coastline communities were especially popular for those who could afford it, and Alexandria’s close proximity to the nation’s capital also played a large role. The first wave of modern development in Waynewood began in 1957, with the Waynewood Recreation Association founded the following year. Decades later the association endures as a foundational element of the local scene, with two 25-meter swimming pools, tennis courts, basketball, baseball, organized team competition and lots of family fun.

Construction in Waynewood lasted until the mid-1960s and then the spigot turned off—this is one of the rare neighborhoods in the region where teardowns and subsequent large trophy homes have not been a major trend. There are some exceptions along the neighborhood’s southern border near the popular Fort Hunt Park, but for the most part, homes for sale stem from the original building boom. That said, there are certainly plenty of renovations as well as add-ons.

Architectural styles in Waynewood tend toward spacious Colonial Revival, Cape Cod, Ramblers and split-levels. There are also some interesting brick and clapboard houses that meld different styles, as well as flat roof mid-century modern designs. With manicured front lawns, nice set-backs and quiet, tree-lined streets, properties in this upscale suburban utopia are in high demand. The highly regarded local Waynewood Elementary School and the vibrant greenbelt along the river add even more to the allure. Also worth mentioning is the super convenient George Washington Memorial Parkway, allowing residences an easy coastline commute into Old Town Alexandria and Washington DC.
