Tudor Style Homes in Washington DC Metro Area

Tudor homes in Washington Metro enjoy a respectable piece of the market pie – less than the mega sellers and more than say Georgian, Dutch rovincial. These unique homes are easily recognizable with their steeply-pitched roofs, side gables and brick, stone and/or stucco exteriors. One of the common building methods is half-timbering in which wooden support beams are exposed through the exterior masonry, forming distinctive patterns. Other common features can include rustic batten-board front doors, windows made up of multiple small panes and side chimneys, often with decorative pots. Tudor Style Homes in Washington DC Metro AreaOriginal English Tudor design goes back to the late 15th through early 17th centuries and covered a range of applications from small daub and wattle cottages to large manors, churches and castles. The Tudor Revival style came into prominence in the Washington metropolitan area during the late 1800's and became the region's most widely used design during the 1920's and '30's. Tudor fell out of style during the 1940's largely due to its 'European look'. The World War II era was a time of great nationalistic pride, typified by an appetite for Colonial Revival homes as well as suburban-centric contemporary design.

The appetite for Tudor homes may have declined during the early baby boom years but it wasn't a lengthy hiatus. Public interest in the stately style returned and to be quite honest, there was always a market for high end Tudor mansions among Washington Metro's sophisticated buyers. There's also the oft-quoted phrase 'something old becomes something new again'. There's a new revival trend in the metropolitan area that includes many traditional design movements, including Tudor.

From antiques to modern adaptations, Tudor homes in Washington Metro are much in demand these days. The price range tends to be more narrow than other popular architectural styles. While you can find a handful of townhouses in the low six figure range, the bulk of the Tudor listings are luxury single-family homes for sale, starting at around $500,000 and quickly escalating. At the upper reaches are some truly stunning mansions, often build prior to the great stock market crash of 1929. Tudor style homes can be found throughout the metropolitan area, in communities such as Arlington and Alexandria, Virginia, Bethesda, Chevy Chase and Potomac, Maryland, and in Washington DC itself.
