Traditional Style Homes in Washington DC Metro Area

One of the most commonly used descriptive terms in Washington Metro real estate is Traditional. According to Webster's dictionary the term equates with customs that have been handed down from previous generations and is also related to historic, authentic and established. When it comes to homes in this part of the country, the term speaks to the earliest settlers from Europe and those that they in turn influenced, such as the Revival period.

To be as accurate as possible, Traditional style homes in the Washington metropolitan area are not defined by any one style but by all styles whose primary roots stretch back to the region's settlement and early growth. Specifically, we're talking about Colonial, Georgian, Federal, Victorian, French Provincial. Beaux Arts, Gothic and the various off-shoots and revival forms. What about Cape Cod? Given that the style dates back to the colonial era in Massachusetts, it's certainly traditional – even if it didn't become popular in this area until the mid-20th century. What about Craftsman homes, are they considered traditional? Although it's a bit of a murky area, the answer is yes – Craftsman homes derived from the English Arts & Crafts design movement and are also associated with kit homes that used a number of traditional patterns. Traditional Style Homes in Washington DC Metro AreaPerhaps the shorter list would be homes that are not considered traditional architecture in Washington Metro. We're talking about Contemporary, Modern, International, Rambler and Split-level – homes that either came of age as unique designs during the modern era or came out of a movement that sought to differ itself from tradition. Sometimes, it's not so much a matter of defining a term on paper as it is recognizing a style when you see it. Or, better yet, feeling drawn to a home. For many of us, the word represents something secure and solid. Traditional style homes can be found in almost all parts of the Metro area, save some very specific subdivisions.

As might be expected, Traditional homes in Washington Metro have an extremely wide price range, from $100,000 well into seven-figure territory. On the lower end of the market scale, you'll find a fair number of properties that really aren't of a classic traditional style. Another interesting variable are new construction homes that are either built in a a traditional style or that meld elements. A good example are new master-built townhouse communities featuring Victorian or Federal-style design. In a part of the country that values its history, traditional design is one more way to try and retain a connection to the past.
