Like many of its neighbors, the history of Temple Hills goes back to rural farming and plantations. The community gets its name from E. Temple, a major landowner during the mid-1800's. Residential expansion began to take place around the turn of the century. Notable residents from the town's formative years included Frank Smalls, Jr, born in Temple Hills and 1896 and later serving in the U.S. House of Representatives. Also of note was William T. 'Sonny' Randall, an outfielder for the Negro baseball leagues of the era, playing on such notable teams as the Black Sox, the Homestead Grays, and the Washinton Aztecs during a career that spanned the early 1930's to the late 1950's. He also worked for the Navy and NASA for 31 years. Temple Hills continued to grow leading up to World War II with a larger residential boom from the 1950's on.
Properties for sale in Temple Hills are considered quite affordable and are mostly single-family homes, with about 15% condos and townhouses. A number of the condos are conversions from World War II-era garden apartment complexes. Prices took a hit after the 2008 market crash but have been rebounding as of late. List prices generally start around $100,000 and gradually climb to about $500,000's. There's a few rare exception in the upper six-figure range. Like most communities in the area, architectural styles include Colonial, Cape, Tudor, mail-order kit bungalows from the pre-WWII era, Ramblers and Split-levels. Most of the newer homes are built in typical custom Colonial-style.
Temple Hills was once known as the home of Rosecroft Raceway, a well known harness racing track that opened in 1949. The track closed its operations quite recently. There are numerous other community amenities, including public indoor and outdoor swimming pools, as well as the private Temple Hills Swim Club. The Temple Hills Recreation Center offers tennis, basketball, arts and crafts programs and more. Also worth mentioning is the Marlow 6 Cinemas which first opened in 1963 and very recently went through an extensive restoration and upgrade. Along with the Capital Beltway, residents can also take advantage of the nearby Southern Avenue Metro Green Line.
