Suburban Homes in Maryland and Virginia

While Downtown Washington DC has become increasingly urbanized, Maryland and Virginia are still often thought of for their suburban homes. This doesn't necessarily mean cookie-cutter neighborhoods and cul-de-sacs. Maryland and Virginia have deep historical roots and share much in the way of tradition and architecture. They're also joined together by economic factors. Loudoun, Virginia is considered to the richest county in the nation and Falls Church, Fairfax, Howard, Montgomery, Arlington and Alexandria aren't far behind.

While affluence is generally part of the picture in Maryland and Virginia, it doesn't necessarily follow that all suburban homes are ridiculously over-valued. It's true that communities like Chevy Chase and Potomac in Maryland, and Cherrydale and Williamsburg in Virginia, are known for an abundance of seven-figure homes. It's equally true however, that there are many more areas throughout the region with great amenities and lower prices. Additionally, suburban homes throughout the region are still finding their way back from the 2008-09 crash.

Rockville is the largest incorporated city in Montgomery County, Maryland, featuring great schools, popular restaurants and large comfortable homes with a median value of $424,000. Gaithersburg with a population of around 60,000 residents is also in Montgomery County, offering a median sales price of $314,000. In Virginia's Arlington County, charming suburban enclaves include centrally-located Claremont with lots of green space and a median list price of $485,000. Columbia Forest is a woodsy post-World War II neighborhood with a great sense of community spirit and single-family homes that generally list between $350,000 - $500,000.

In truth, there are way too many deserving suburban neighborhoods in the DC metro area to adequately discuss within the confines of a real estate article. There's a great diversity across the region from city corridors to tiny enclaves nestled against parks and streams. Neighborhoods like Rosslyn and Clarendon-Courthouse in Arlington are heavy on condos while areas to the west become more oriented toward single-family homes. In a similar vein. Maryland is generally thought of as more suburban than Alexandria, Virginia. That said, outlying Alexandria communities such as Kingstowne and Franconia have become very popular in recent years as quintessential suburbs.

So what does the term suburban actually conjure up? For many, it's a way of life – good jobs, tight-knit communities and lots to do, from shopping to after-school soccer to the grand tradition of equestrian sports. Virginia and Maryland are well known for their elite level of English-style riding with plenty of top-rated hunter/jumper events and plenty of beautiful barns and stables. Of course, suburban homes are also about the actual four walls as compared to demographics or school systems.

Just like communities, there's no single image when it comes to suburban homes in Maryland and Virginia. There's Colonial styles spanning a century and Craftsman-styles both old and new. Some think of Ramblers and contemporary homes as the suburban ideal while others dream of Tudors or Capes. If there is a constant, it's the idea of owning a piece of the American dream – a nice house with a yard, convenient to the interstates with a Whole Foods and a Starbucks within striking distance. In in Maryland and Virginia, that's very doable.
