Stratford Homes For Sale in Alexandria, VA
Located side-by-side in the southern reaches of Alexandria are two waterfront communities—Stratford Landing and Stratford on the Potomac. The first lies along Little Hunting Creek and the second is on the adjoining Potomac River. The continued curve of the two connected bodies of water allows for a number of luxurious waterfront homes for sale here. But even if you don’t have direct access from your property, you’ll still be within walking distance.
The two Stratfords are within the larger Fort Hunt community, and also part of Fairfax County. They are also next-door to Mount Vernon. This is an area steeped in history. George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate was once so large that it stretched along more than eight miles of coastline, including five working farms. Stratford Landing and Stratford on the Potomac exist on land that was once one of those 18th century plantations, known as River Farm.
There’s still a few historic homes within the two neighborhoods’ bounds but the vast majority of homes for sale were built from the late 1940s all the way to the present day. That lengthy development period stands in contrast to neighboring subdivisions such as Wessynton and Riverside Estates which were products of a more narrowly defined mid-century contemporary construction era.
As a result, properties for sale in Stratford on the Potomac and Stratford Landing come in a number of architectural styles, including various subsets of Colonial Revival, English Tudor, Cape Cod, French Country, Arts & Crafts and split-foyer homes. There’s also some interesting hybrids that meld different styles, as well as mid-century modern modernist designs. Prices range from around $650,000 for original Ramblers to well over a million dollars for large waterfront homes.
The two Stratfords represent sought-after affluent suburbs with a waterfront proximity in Alexandria. The popular Stratford Recreation Association features a swimming pool, tennis courts and organized team competition, and local schools include Stratford Landing Elementary. And when residents which to get away from their bucolic surrounds, or just commute to work, the George Washington Memorial Parkway leads right up the coast to Old Town Alexandria and Washington DC.
