Split Foyer Style Homes in Washington DC Metro Area

Split Foyer homes in the Washington metropolitan area are often lumped together with split level and bi-level homes. While they're part of a common grouping and architectural era, there are some differences. The split foyer designation is quite literal – the front door entrance opens into a foyer with a short set of stairs going up and one going down. Split foyers can also be called split entry homes and often have only one true or improved level on the upper level with a fully-finished basement representing the lower level.

The post-war baby boomer generation brought a burst of building activity in Washington Metro, Split foyer homes presented the opportunity for more living space than Rambler homes which arrived on the scene around the same time. Split foyer homes often presented only one or one and a half levels from the street, with both floors visible from the rear. In other words, these homes are commonly built on a slope or uneven ground. In some cases, the lower level will offer half-windows at the front ground level or full windows facing into landscaping or exterior window wells. Split Foyer Style Homes in Washington DC Metro AreaSplit foyer homes don't necessarily have to be single-unit detached dwellings. You'll also find townhouses and duplexes in the Washington metropolitan area making use of split foyers as central access points for multiple units. The vast majority of split foyer listings in the region can be found throughout suburban neighborhoods in Maryland and Northern Virginia with some exceptions in DC suburbs like Forest Hills and Hillcrest. While they came into fashion as practical solutions for expanding suburban family life, you'll also find some decidedly upscale versions in affluent communities such as Bethesda, Great Falls, McLean and Potomac.

One of the results of the sustained real estate recovery in the Washington metropolitan area is a tightening of inventory. At the same time, the population continues to grow. Split foyer homes admittedly began falling out of style as the 20th century came to a close but there has been a recent resurgence in very recent years. Some point to a new revival trend in mid-century architecture while others say it's simply a factor of supply and demand. Whatever the case, there's a healthy stock of split foyer homes ranging from very low six figures all the way into the million dollar range.
