Silver Spring MD homes for sale are nicely diversified, with exactly two-thirds single-family homes and the rest condos. The price range is fairy wide as well, from five-figure condos to large homes rising into the low seven-figures. There's no set commonality in age or architecture either – modern residential development goes back to late 1800's with construction continuing at a steady pace ever since. Condos range from one-level buildings to high-rises, and detached home-styles include Colonial, Victorian, Cape Cod, Mediterranean, Craftsman, Rambler and Mid-Century Modern.
Silver Spring was once a mining town, hence the name. A forward-thinking land speculator bought up a lot of land at the time, setting in motion the area's modern commercial and residential development. Since 2000, there has been a new concerted effort to revitalize the downtown area with smart, sustainable growth. Several city blocks were recently completely reconstructed resulting in a large outdoor shopping plaza, “Downtown Silver Spring”.
There's a number of neighborhoods and subdivisions within Silver Spring's bounds, reflecting different eras and styles. If there's a common identifier here, it's comfortable suburbia – the median family income is $77,541 and there's a healthy job market. As for amenities, there's a new Whole Foods and a Trader Joe's and restaurants with cuisines from Ethiopian to New American. Among the many entertainment choices is the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center, a complete restoration of a grand old Art Deco cinema, sponsored by the American Film Institute.
