Riverside Estates Homes For Sale in Alexandria, VA
Located along Little Hunting Creek in Alexandria, Virginia is an upscale residential subdivision known aptly as Riverside Estates. This smallish enclave is within the larger Mount Vernon community and is also part of Fairfax County. Many of the homes for sale here enjoy a mid-century contemporary appeal, although there are newer residences as well.
This is an area known for its long history—particularly its connection with George Washington who owned 7,400 acres of land including five farms that were part of his Mount Vernon estate—River Farm, Muddy Farm, Dogue Run Farm, Union Farm and Mansion Farm.
But while the land that Riverside Estates sits on is part of the old Mansion Farm, it remained virtually untouched for nearly two centuries. All that changed around 1956 when the subdivision was platted and developed, with construction continuing for the next decade.
This is a neighborhood that was geared toward a rapidly expanding population during the baby boomer years. The lots sizes were generous and home styles included Ramblers, larger split-foyer homes and some intriguing contemporary styles melding split-level forms with modernist influences such as flat roofs, wide overhangs and oversized windows. The original builders were also fond of adapting homes to their natural hilly surroundings.
The mid-century modern movement was especially prevalent in this southern part of Alexandria. Examples include the Wessynton neighborhood which is next-door to the west and Hollin Hills a couple miles north.
But there have also been more recent developments in Riverside Estates, with a modest level of new custom home construction as well as some upscale townhouses toward the outer fringes of the neighborhood between Richmond Highway and Mount Vernon Road.
Homes for sale in Riverside Estates typically list in the mid-to-high six figure range, making it a relatively affordable and highly sought-after neighborhood, especially considering the overall affluence of the area. There’s popular local schools such as Riverside Elementary and Mount Vernon High. Residents also enjoy local shops and restaurants plus several parks and the Riverside Estates Community Center.
The location is also convenient for commuters with Richmond Highway and George Washington Memorial Parkway leading north toward Old Town Alexandria and Washington DC. Offering reasonable prices and a slice of mid-century American charm, Riverside Estates provides a nice alternative to the multi-million dollar mansions that are often found in these parts.
