Parker-Gray Homes for Sale
Parker-Grey is a neighborhood in the northwest section of Old Town Alexandria that is rich in history. It’s also a place known by multiple names—Uptown, Uptown/Parker-Grey and the Parker-Grey Historic District. Additionally, the new upscale Old Town Commons townhouse community exists within Parker-Grey but is generally referred to autonomously. It’s a bit confusing and is best sorted out through the lens of yesteryear.
First, a little geographical perspective. The Parker-Grey neighborhood covers a 40-block area and is bounded by First Street to the north, Alfred Street to the east, Cameron Street to the south and N. West street to the west. It was known as an African-American community going back well over a century and was a haven for escaped slaves during the Civil War era. The neighborhood takes its name from the Parker-Grey School which was founded in 1920, but it was commonly known as “Uptown” from the 1800s until the 1950s when it was officially renamed. It has been a local historic district since 1984 and a national historic district since 2010.

Despite the historical designation, there has been a redevelopment trend in Parker-Grey in recent years. A number of 1940s Colonial Revival apartments that served as affordable public housing have been demolished to make way for the Old Town Commons development from EYA. The city mandated that developers replace said housing on a one-by-one basis—some of the new low-rent housing has remained in the area while other replacement construction has taken place elsewhere.
The result of all this has been an interesting blend of new and old homes and condos for sale, as well as the expected growing pains as preservationists seek to retain historic buildings, landmarks and a community legacy. Parker-Grey shares some of that hodge-podge sensibility with its next door Braddock Road Metro neighborhood—each possesses an eclectic array of homes styles, including row houses, Queen Anne, Craftsman, Greek Revival and other architecture that has evolved over time. And of course, the new condos and luxury multistory townhouses like those in Old Town Commons are also an integral part of the new picture.
Residents can stroll to the Braddock Road Metro Station as well as a Trader Joe’s and the recently opened Harris Teeter in Old Town North. There’s also the Torpedo Factory Art Center, The Potomac River, Waterfront Park and the forward trending Carlyle District. Whether it’s fun and funky bars and restaurants, a sense of seminal Alexandria history or a great collection of homes and condos for sale, Parker-Grey is indeed a charming and unique community.
