Oxon Hill MD Homes For Sale
Located in the southern part of Prince George's County is the town of Oxon Hill. It's not as densely populated as some of Maryland's communities with 17,722 residents spread out over 6.6 square miles. As the name implies, it's hilly land with parks and greenbelts and stretches down to the banks of the Potomac River. Oxon Hill is only two miles from the southern border of Washington DC and lies directly across the river from Alexandria. The community is bisected by the Capital Beltway which leads straight into Alexandria via the Woodrow Wilson bridge. Oxon Hill gets its name from Thomas Addison, an early colonist who built a huge hilltop manor in 1711, overlooking the Potomac. The manor's name and surroundings served to remind Addison of his beloved home in Oxford, England. The manor eventually burned down and was rebuilt as a 49-room neo-Georgian mansion in 1928 by the U.S. Undersecretary of State and is now maintained by the Maryland-National Capital Park. Oxon Hill went through a major residential boom from the 1940's through to the 1990's, tapering off somewhat since then. Bordered by Fort Washington to the south, Oxon Hill became home to several garden apartment communities, built as affordable housing for those involved in the war effort. Today, many of those units have converted to condos.
Homes for sale in Oxon Hill are quite affordable. There's plenty of Ramblers, Split-levels, Colonials, Capes and condos, including older conversions and newer townhouses. Property prices generally run from around $150,000 to $450,000 with a few exceptions for more expensive homes that have been expanded and customized. While new home construction lagged from 1990 to 2000, it has been slowly picking up due to available land and community features. It's likely that the recent uptick in new homes will eventually begin to drive the overall market value up. It's also worth noting that Oxon Hill serves as the gateway to the National Harbor, a major new waterfront resort community with upscale condos, hotels, restaurants, shops and more.
When it comes to community fun and amenities, Oxon Hill has much to offer. There's Henson Golf Course as well as the Oxon Hill Recreation Club which includes a private swim club. There's also the Tucker Road Athletic Complex with an indoor ice rink, plus the Glassmanor Community Center Park with basketball and tennis courts, a gymnasium, a game room, arts and crafts and a kitchen. For those seeking public water fun there's the North Barnaby Community Splash Park, featuring a 25-meter swimming pool, a lily pad crossing feature, a “tipping buckets” waterfall, an aqua wall climb and water slides. Also, the community is known for the historic Oxon Cove Farm, a former plantation now run by the National Park Service. This working farm features animals and crops, as well as hiking/biking trails alongside a picturesque stream.
