Olney MD Homes For Sale Early life in Olney centered around agriculture. Around 1800 there began a shift toward skilled craftsmen, including toolmakers, carpenters, potters and other artisans. The village was known as Mechanicsville for a period of time, eventually changing names in order to differentiate itself from a similarly named community. While there's still some historical homes of note in the area, the real residential boom began shortly after the end of World War II. Olney 's neighbors include Brookeville to the north, Sandy Spring to the east, Aspen Hill to the south and Rockville to the west.

With a median list price of $499,000, Olney is squarely in Washington Metro's priciest real estate markets. It's worth noting that sales prices average lower than list, a function of the most expensive listings which tend to sit on market longer. There are 62% detached single-family homes here, with condos and townhouses accounting for 38%. The area wasn't particularly affected during the recent economic downturn – homes in Olney tend to hold their value with a solid upscale appeal. It's not all mansions of course, there are plenty of opportunities for well-kept and affordable Ramblers, Split-Levels, Capes and Colonials in the $300,000 to $400,000 range. Still, it's the upper-tier homes that are the real eye-catchers in Olney – impressive residences in the upper six-figure reaches with traditional architectural design and beautifully landscaped yards.

The historic Olney Ale House which dates to 1924 still operates on the town's eastern border. One of the town's top attractions, it features great pub menu food and a massive stone fireplace in the dining room. Parks and recreational facilities include Longwood Park, Cherrywood Park and Olney Manor Park which features the Olney Swim Center with an indoor pool for public use. Olney also has great schools, a private country club and golf, and the Olney Theatre with top-class professional stage productions attracting audiences from all over the region. Equestrian activities are popular here as are other outdoor sports such as soccer and lacrosse.
