There are numerous foreign embassies nearby, including those for Great Britain, Poland, Italy, Finland and Norway. The area is often referred to as Embassy Row. There are not a lot of homes for sale in the neighborhood and they tend to be on the pricy side, with an average list price of $1,475,000. Approximately 80 percent of properties for sale are single-family homes, with condos accounting for the remainder. Current properties on the market begin with a two-bedroom condo listed for $929,000 and go all the way up to a large mansion with an asking price of $12 million.

From a bird's eye view, Observatory Circle is an oddly-shaped neighborhood. The largest portion is dominated by the circular grounds of the Naval Observatory, with sharp residential triangles to the northwest and southeast. The condos are available through a few modern high-rise buildings. Schools in the area include Stoddert Elementary School, Hardy Middle School and Ellington Senior High. Other neighborhoods in the area include Adams-Morgan, Cathedral Heights, Massachusetts Avenue Heights and Georgetown.
