Lynhaven Homes For Sale in Alexandria, VA

True to the diverse and eclectic nature of Alexandria, the small community of Lynhaven has its own unique charm. Located in the northwestern section of the city, the neighborhood owes much of its real estate market to 1940s-era townhouse construction. With quiet streets lined with tall leafy trees and a sense of collective pride, Lynhaven has become a beacon for real estate buyers seeking affordable homes for sale in an expensive city.

Early residential development in Lynhaven had much to do with the nearby Potomac Yard, once one of the nation’s busiest railroad switching yards. Land developer J. Wesley Buchanan saw a need for affordable homes for Yard workers and their families, and set about constructing boxy brick row house-style townhouses with generous front porches. The first 50 homes were delivered in 1941 and the fledgling town was named for Buchanan’s daughter Rosalyn (“Lyn”). Construction continued until around 1944 with 300 row house homes built in total. Later models featured clapboard front facades.

Prices were indeed affordable, with advertisements offering the row houses for $31.65 per month, just as long as potential buyers could verify a $30 per week income. The 1950s brought a new wave of construction with two-story brick Colonial Revival garden-style apartment buildings. There were also some single family homes and duplexes built during the mid-century era. More recently, there has been a phase of Colonial-style townhouse construction.

These days, homes for sale in Lynhaven (from the original townhouses to newer dwellings) tend to be priced between the low to mid six figures. While there’s a certain commonality in the row house styles, residents find ways to differentiate their properties through landscaping and lovely front gardens. There is also an active local civic organization.

Lynhaven is dissected by E. Glebe Road and bordered by Mount Vernon Avenue to the west and Potomac Yard to the east. That means that residents have plenty of nearby amenities, from the hip indie boutique shops and eateries along Mount Vernon Avenue to the new emerging businesses at the Yard. But the choices certainly don’t end there. Four Mile Run Farmers and Artisans Market is just to the north and Old Town Alexandria lies to the south with all its amazing attractions. Location was key when Lynhaven was first developed and that’s doubly true today.
