Landover is multi-neighborhood community in Maryland that measures slightly more than four square miles but is heavily populated with approximately 23,000 residents. One of most affordable real estate markets in Prince George's County, it is also associated with Landover Hills which lies to the north and Greater Landover to the south. Route 50 runs through the community and the Capital Beltway lies just to the east. An upper tributary of the Anacostia River runs just a few miles to the west of town.
Landover was known for its farms and summer homes in the early days. Of note was William Wilson who purchased a 588-acre tract in 1752. Wilson planted tobacco and future generations farmed the land as well. Portions of the land were sold over time, and grain took over from tobacco during the mid-1800's. In 1930, one of the Wilson heirs build the Wilson Farm on the remaining 282 acres. This was a successful and long-running dairy operation that ultimately included 14 buildings The land was sold off during the modern era – 80 acres became part of the Maryland Park system and the remainder was developed as the Jack Kent Cooke stadium and later FedEx Field, home of the NFL's Washington Redskins. While Landover's primary neighborhoods came into being after World War II, there are still a number of historic older homes, most to the northern end of town and either on or near the appropriately named Old Landover Road. Here you'll find Victorians with generous porches dating back to the turn of the century as well as cottages from the 1930's and 40's. The area is mostly single-family homes with about 22% condos and townhouses. In addition to older homes you'll find a lot of find Split-levels, Ramblers and Colonial styles, and very affordable prices with a median list price of just $109,000. Landover was significantly affected by the real estate downturn – list prices were just shy of $200,000 at their peak in 2008. Market volatility has been fairly sustained here with a number of dips and spikes, but finally seems to be showing a more consistent rebound.
Among the larger neighborhoods in Landover are Kent Village, White House Heights, and Glenarden. There are a number of greenspaces including Kentland Park, Barlowe Community Park and the Columbia Park Recreation Center. Among the local historical landmarks is Beall's Pleasure, a stately summer home built in 1795 for the Secretary of the Navy. Other nearby communities of significance include Cheverly, Bladensburg and Hyattsville. While Landover doesn't have the same retail presence of some its neighbors, it does have FedEx Field which is not only home to the Redskins, but has also hosted numerous concerts including Bruce Springsteen, U2, the Rolling Stones and Paul McCartney.
