Kensington is a smallish town in Montgomery County, Maryland, north of the 495 Capital Beltway and abutting Rock Creek Park to the west. The area was mostly farmland until the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad arrived in 1873. Another 20 years passed before it was developed as a Victorian community, receiving its present name. With around 2,200 residents, the town is known for its charming old homes and a nice quality of life. Kensington MD Homes For SaleThe real estate market in Kensington is primarily single-family homes with a median value of $557,500 and prices ranging up into the low seven-figures. While there's a variety of architectural types, the lion's share belongs to the Victorian style, with generous porches, gabled roofs, bay windows and dormers. There's not a lot in the way of new construction although there is some – mostly large homes built in a traditional style.

While Kensington as an actual incorporated town measures just .48 square-miles, there is also Kensington Estates to the west, developed post-World War II, and is also sometimes referred to as North and South Kensington. The overall area is referred to Greater Kensington, with a combined population of over 10,000 residents and similar architecture and prices. Kensington is located immediately northeast of the large Bethesda community.

Kensington has been known as a commuter suburb since its earliest days. The area is now served by the Kensington MARC, operating out of the original B&O location at Howard Avenue and part of the Kensington Historic District. The neighborhood has both a Giant Food and Safeway, numerous local mom and pop-type businesses and popular eateries such as K Town Bistro and Two Pears Cafe. Area schools include Rock View Elementary, Kensington-Parkwood Middle School and Albert Einstein High.
