Hyattsville MD Homes For Sale
The City of Hyattsville, Maryland is known for its rich history and a longstanding commitment to arts and culture. Located inside the Capital Beltway in Prince George's County, the city only spans 2.70 square miles yet is home to nearly 18,000 residents. Even more remarkable is the fact that 81% of the properties are detached single-family homes. This high-density environment manages to combine a wide variety of architectural types, including large custom homes, old antiques, mixed-use developments and artists lofts, along with a vibrant commercial presence. Hyattsville abuts U.S. Route 1 to its east, and through its Community Initiative Project, is often associated with the larger Gateway Community Development Corporation that runs along the same Route 1 Corridor. Hyattsville was once home to the Algonquin and Iroquois tribes. Colonial settlers began purchasing land in the early 1700's and the area was known as Beale Town for a period of time. In 1783 the first American stagecoach route passed through. Rich soil made the area popular with tobacco farmers and by 1812 it had become an intersection for the Washington and Baltimore Turnpike. The B&O Railroad arrived in 1835 along with telegraph lines. In 1845 Christopher Clark Hyatt purchased a parcel of land, opened a store with postal service and declared it the town of Hyattsville. The post Civil War federal expansion, the rising popularity of nearby Blandensburg's Spa Springs and a steady influx of DC residents seeking summer homes helped fuel development and by 1890, Hyattsville was one of only two towns in Prince George's County with a population of over 1,000. In 1893 the electric streetcar arrived, further boosting the population.
Homes in Hyattsville during the turn of the century, ran the gamut from grand Victorians to smaller cottage-styles. The presence of the railroad resulted in a popular wave of Sears mail-order kit homes in various sizes and designs. The Sears Modern Homes (often referred to generally as Craftsman homes) offered a much wider range than some people realize – from simple cabins to large two-story homes. Even with its large influx of residents during the modern era, Hyattsville retains its early charm – the town began a preservation movement in the late 1970's that led to a historic district with nearly 1,000 homes in the Victorian, Colonial Revival, Sears Modern Homes, and Arts and Crafts styles. Prices here are competitive with others in the Washington Metropolitan area, typically ranging from the low six figures to high six figures. Other neighborhoods in the area include Mount Rainier and Brentwood.
While Hyattsville has long been known for its artists community, an additional influx had to do with a rising appetite for loft space in Washington DC during the 1990's. Simply put, lofts and art spaces became increasingly expensive and a lot of creative types looked toward outlying areas, especially a two-mile stretch of historic US Route 1 in Prince George's County, Maryland. Today, Hyattsville is a vibrant town, known for galleries, funky coffeehouses, popular cafes and restaurants, and a real pride of community. You can live in a rambling farmhouse, a hipster loft in the Gateway Arts District or anything in-between. There's a lot to see and do in this geographically small town, including the popular Mall at Prince George's.
