Glencarlyn is a neighborhood in western Arlington, measuring .480 square miles with a population of about 2,388 residents. Once known as a summer getaway for Washington DC residents, the community was founded in 1888. It is bounded by Arlington Boulevard to the north, Glencarlyn Park to the east, S. 5th Street to the south and Carlin Springs Road to the west. The oldest known house in Arlington County is the Ball-Sellers House, built in the mid 1700's and still standing on street. The home was situated on a 166-acre land grant along Four Mile Run and was sold to a tailor named William Carlin in 1766. In 1880, a third generation of Carlins built an adjoining home in 1880, and sold the property in 1887, at which time it was subdivided as Glencarlyn, the oldest subdivision in Arlington. The area was largely farmland until the start of World War II, with a large number of homes built between 1940 and 1960. Glencarlyn is well known for its large self-named park, running along its northeastern bounds and overlapping with Four Mile Run. The 97-acre park offers an amphitheater, nature trails, fishing, a separate dog park, and more. Carlin Springs Elementary School and Kenmore Middle School share a campus in the neighborhood. Arlington Public Schools has proposed building an additional 600-seat “choice” school on the site as well, to serve outside families. The Glencarlyn Citizen's Association is opposed to the new construction, which would commence in 2017 and could impact traffic and open space.
