Georgian Style Homes in Washington DC Metro Area

One of the more popular home styles in Washington Metro's upscale real estate market is the Georgian home. Named after a series of four British King Georges who reigned in succession from 1714 to 1830, the style is often thought to combine influences of the era with common hallmarks including a classic symmetrical design with hipped-gable roof, shutters and chimneys at each end. Colonial Georgian architecture was popular in the metropolitan area from the Revolutionary War period to the early 1800's and combined with Neo-Palladian design to influence the Federalist movement.

While Georgian design is associated with the monarchy, its earliest architectural roots are traceable to Sir Christopher Wren. There aren't a a lot of surviving early structures in Washington Metro due to hundreds of years of residential development. One of the most famous examples is Gunston Hall, once the center of a 5,500-acre tobacco plantation, built during the 1750's for founding father George Mason. This classic brick home still stands along the banks of the Potomac in Lorton, Virginia. Also noteworthy is the Friendship House built in 1795 on Capitol Hill, as well as a string of four connected historic brick townhouses known as Wheat Row in DC's Southwest Waterfront. Georgian Style Homes in Washington DC Metro AreaIn today's Washington Metro real estate market place, Georgian homes from different eras combine to form a measurable group of high-end listings. The early Georgian period gave way to Georgian Revival or Neo-Georgian which evolved into a lasting design trend categorized by a a square exterior with four first floor front windows and five on the second story, usually featuring a center-placed Palladian window over a front door framed by either columns or pedestals.

Georgian homes in Washington Metro tend toward the pricey side . Every now and then you'll find a Georgian row house or townhouse unit in the $350,000 range but for the most part they list as detached single-family dwellings, starting in the mid-to-high six figures and quickly climbing. The high end is categorized by large stately multi-million dollar manors, such as a Georgian style English country home in DC's Wesley Heights neighborhood, built in 1935 and listed at $8.895 million. Georgian-style homes can be found in affluent communities throughout the region, including Bethesda and Potomac in Maryland, Fairfax Station, Great Falls and McLean in Virginia, and the city of Washington itself.
