French Provincial Style Homes in Washington DC Metro Area

French Provincial homes in the Washington metropolitan area exist in a rare and exclusive class – the upper stratosphere of the real estate market. What is a French provincial home and how does it differ from French Country? First, there are the common elements – French influenced design for example. The word provincial derives from Provence, a historical region in Southeastern France and can be used in a variety of ways to describe influences related to interior design, architecture or region. When it comes to DC Metro provincial homes, there can be another and simpler definition – big.

Are French provincial homes really larger than French country homes? Are the design elements all that different? In today's Washington Metro marketplace the lines have become blurred. Traditionally, French provincial homes date back to the reign of Louis XIV when nobles built large mansions with steep roofs with a symmetry to the tall, curved double French windows. Chimneys were typically center-placed and there weren't the towers associated with the French Normandy homes. Some of these are distinctions have simply gone by the wayside in the modern era – towers are common, chimneys can be side-placed and windows aren't necessarily curved.

French Provincial Style Homes in Washington DC Metro AreaAmong other design elements associated with French provincial homes are brick, stone or stucco exteriors, copper accent and detailing, and slate or ceramic roof tiling. Second-story porches or balconies are common, sometimes accompanied by balustrades. The style enjoyed a revival in the Washington Metro area during the early 1900's. More recently, there has been an uptick in new custom homes styles associated with the French provincial tag, especially in and around some of the upscale suburban communities abutting the Potomac River.

In other words, look in Belle View, Bethesda, Fort Hunt, Great Falls, Potomac, and McLean, just to name a few.

French provincial versus country – south versus north, warmer colors versus cooler, more elaborate homes versus more rustic. These are some of the traditional French schools of thought but as you'll notice from browsing listings, the tags used by realtors to advertise properties are often generalized and share lots of crossover attributes. One thing can't be argued however – the top of the line French provincial homes represent a very exclusive niche, with prices soaring as high as $18 million for a ten-bedroom property in Potomac, Maryland. We can all dream.
