French Country Style Homes in Washington DC Metro Area

French County home styles are not entirely uncommon in the Washington metropolitan area, often sharing influences with other older traditional styles and hybrids. Originally rooted in the French rural countryside, the style applied to cottages, farmhouses and large estates. When it comes to DC, Maryland and Virginia however, these homes are almost exclusively large and expensive. The architectural style has enjoyed a strong resurgence in recent years, often employed for new custom homes in upscale suburban neighborhoods.

You'll find a number of variations on the French County look throughout Washington Metro. Some of the common attributes include stone or stucco exteriors, multi-gabled or hipped-gable roofs, shutters, stonework relief at corner-lines and curved arches. Interior elements can include exposed beams, tiled floors, stone mantles and wrought-iron railings along stairs and balconies. Extremely thick walls were one of the authentic French elements but are not as commonly found locally. Last but certainly not least are the classic French doors and windows, opening outward rather than up and down. French Country Style Homes in Washington DC Metro AreaFrench Country style residences don't often come up for sale in Washington DC itself. Still it's not uncommon to actually see buildings in the style in the nation's capital. The city's chief planner was renowned French architect Charles Pierre L'Enfant and while Federalism had a strong influence in the shaping of the new district there were also numerous examples of a richer provincial design. Foreign embassies, museums and large mansions often leaned heavily to traditional French architecture.

Where are most French Country homes for sale found? While a few pop up now and then in DC, you're more apt to find these luxury digs right across the Potomac River in affluent neighborhoods such as Bethesda and Potomac in Maryland and Great Falls and McLean in Virginia. The price range is almost exclusively in seven-territory – it's very uncommon to find a French Country home in Washington Metro for less than a million dollars and they usually climb well above that mark.
