More About Fort Myer Heights Condos For Sale
Fort Myer itself was built in 1861 and is notable as a military base for a number of reasons, including housing the celebrated Buffalo Soldiers Calvary Regiment and being the site of the first military in 1908. Residential development began in support of the base, with the Fort Myer Heights Citizens Association forming in 1890. The first Arlington trolley was launched in 1892, consisting of a horse-drawn streetcar running from Rosslyn to Ft. Meyer. It became electrified in 1895. Most of the earliest homes from that era no longer in exist.
The more modern phase of Arlington's Fort Myer Heights development began in the late 1930's. Early construction favored single-family Colonials and modest bungalows, with a number of garden-style apartments appearing in the 1940's and 1950's, and offered as affordable housing. Today, real estate sales in the neighborhood is more driven by condos and townhouses, although there are also some single-family homes. Median list prices stand at $569,000, and RAFOM and other community groups are trying to regulate new commercial development, feeling that the diversity and uniqueness of the neighborhood could be compromised with affordable housing being phased out.
Fort Myer Heights couldn't be more conveniently located for those commuting into as Washington Dc, with neighborhood roads leading directly to the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge. The area is dotted with trees and small grassy parks, along with Hillside Park which takes up a city block and is referred to by locals as a “unique urban forest”. There's a lot to like about this community, from fun, funky restaurants and shops to its old Arlington history. And while some locals would like to hold the line against over-development, the prime urban location probably means that further change is coming.
