The median list price is about $500,000 with a sure and steady rise in values. The overall affordability of homes here might surprise some, given the high Forbes ranking. This isn't to say that there aren't pricy listings – in fact there is a strong market her for million dollar-plus custom homes. The simple truth is that the city offers an uncommonly wide range of options and that itself plays into its popularity.

While some neighboring communities like Fair Oaks and Fair Lakes were residentially developed during the post-World War boom, Fairfax City has a lengthier history, settled in the early 1800's by farmers.
