New residents come to Donaldson Run in search of attractive detached single-family homes for sale that have been built over a lengthy period of time. But buyers are equally attracted to a way of life shaped by the tributary, the parkland and all those woodsy trails where one can hike or run their dogs, passing through the stands of tulip poplars, beech, oak, bamboo and English ivy.

The upscale neighborhood is bordered by the Washington Golf and Country Club at its northwestern corner, and also by the neighborhoods of Old Dominion to the west and Dover to the east. Lee Highway touches along the southern border.

The history of Donaldson Run dates back to James Donaldson, a colonial settler and farmer who first settled the land way back in the 1700s. It remained in the Donaldson family for many generations. Curious visitors can still spy an old antique farmhouse or cabin in the woods here and there. But concerted residential development didn’t begin until the early 1930s, continuing thereafter until around 1960. More recently, there has been a spate of teardowns and new construction projects resulting in both new custom homes and major add-ons.

Homes for sale in Donaldson Run typically start around $650,000 and climb to around $2 million. That said, the active inventory has been fairly tight as of late. Architectural styles run the gamut, with lovely old Victorians, plenty of large Colonial Revivals, Cape Cods, English Tudor and some intriguing mid-century contemporary designs. Newer construction favors everything from Arts & Crafts to stunning modernist styles.

Residents have plenty of local outdoor attractions with the aforementioned parks and greenspaces, plus Lee Heights Park and Marcey Road Park with tennis and basketball courts. And then there’s the fabulous Donaldson Run Recreation Association with a huge swimming pool, swim team and dive team. Schools in the area include Taylor Elementary, Williamsburg Middle School, the enlarged Stratford Middle School (on track to open in 2019) and Yorktown High School. The community’s active civic association is also working to establish a North Arlington Farmers Market at Marymount University.

Beautiful homes for sale, a meandering stream, lovely parks and walking paths that lead to the Potomac River—it’s no wonder this neighborhood has become so popular. But when you tack on the great public schools, a private four-year university and the legendary Washington Golf and Country Club, the appeal becomes even greater.
