Contemporary Style Homes in Washington DC Metro Area

What exactly defines a contemporary home in Washington Metro? Websters Dictionary describes contemporary as being of the moment so wouldn't that mean that any home is contemporary at the time of construction? If so, when does a home's contemporary designation expire? In the most general of ways, contemporary architecture can be regarded as homes built since World War II with design elements that are different from other traditional styles. On the other hand, adding the term to traditional styles has also become a popular hook, i.e. Contemporary Craftsman. The term is also often combined with Modern or Mid-Century. Contemporary Style Homes in Washington DC Metro Area Perhaps the simplest way to categorize contemporary homes in Washington Metro is to focus on those capturing a certain sense of style and possessing elements of modern design. Contemporary homes can seem sophisticated, imbued with an innate sense of cool, they may be built from glass and steel, brick, stucco, wood or recycled materials such as railroad freight containers. Contemporary homes can be low-slug or tall with balconies and room sections jutting out every which way. They often feature lots of right angles and clean lines. Above all, they look like they belong on the cover of a magazine.

When we think of contemporary homes it's often in the sense of million-dollar single-family dwellings but that doesn't have to be the case. Condo buildings, townhouses and mixed-used development projects are increasingly displaying distinct contemporary looks. From downtown DC to Clarendon-Courthouse in Arlington, new contemporary trends in multi-unit housing are making waves. Once again, we come to realization that the term is is not necessarily one style unto itself but a larger categorization for fresh design that feels of the moment even when incorporating influences from the past.

Robert Gurney, David Jameson, Mark McInturff and Barnes Vanze are some of the most prominent names in Washington Metro contemporary design. When it comes to the emerging “new old house” design movement, Russell Versaci is known for using classic styles to create new custom homes. While contemporary homes can be found in many parts of the greater metropolitan area, they are often associated with affluent suburbs such as Alexandria, Berkley in DC, Bethesda and Potomac in Maryland and McLean and Great Falls in Virginia. As with all homes for sale, there is a wide range of prices with the top end climbing high into seven-figure territory.
