Founded in 1913, Cheverly is a smallish town in Prince George's County, Maryland, covering 3.5 square miles of land space and home to around 6,200 residents. Cheverly is not far from the Maryland/DC line and bordered by highway 50 to the west and highway 295 to the east. Adding to commuter convenience is the Cheverly Metro station. The town is known for quiet tree-lined streets, large lots and affordable homes. You won't find a lot in the way of new custom construction here, although there is the rare exception. You're also not apt to find big-box stores or shopping malls. What you will find however, are parks and playgrounds, tennis courts, a community swimming pool and residents that are proud of its somewhat circuitous and bumpy beginnings. Cheverly MD Homes For Sale In the early 1800's the land around Cheverly was part of a large homestead and tobacco plantation known as Mount Hope. In 1904, the acreage was sold and platted for a planned community to be known as Cheverly Gardens. The plan never really took off and the land was sold once again in 1918 to Robert Marshall, president of Washington Suburban Realty. Marshall's first order of business was establishing residency by moving into the old plantation manor. He then paved a road to the Pennsylvania Railroad and began ordering catalog kit-houses from Sears Modern Homes and McClure Homes (known popularly as Craftsman homes). In 1927 Marshall lost his company to famed DC developer Henry Wardman. In 1929, Wardman lost his fortune in the stock market crash and the company went bankrupt. The town and its residents had taken root by that point however. Cheverly was incorporated in 1931 and continued its leisurely development. The original Mount Hope homestead still stands and has been the town's official symbol since 1931.

Cheverly's residential development includes 22 subdivisions spread out over a 60-year period. Construction has tapered off in recent years with only five subdivision built since 1970 – the most recent was completed in 2000. The real estate market is represented by an eclectic mixture of styles, including farmhouses, bungalows, Colonials, Cape Cods, Split-levels, various Ranch and Rambler styles and a few custom styles. The housing stock is almost exclusively detached single-family properties.  Average values are higher in Cheverly than many surrounding communities, even if the homes themselves aren't always as large or new. Most active listings falls into a fairly narrow range 200,000 to $500,000.

Community pride and spirit count for a lot in Cheverly. There are numerous group organizations such as the Woman's Club, Garden Club, the Boys and Girls Club, and the Soccer Club, as well as community vegetable gardens, plenty of parks, playgrounds and rec centers. The popular Cheverly Community Market runs bi-weekly and there's also the Riverdale Park Farmers Market. Organized events include Cheverly Day, flea markets and holiday celebrations. The Cheverly Swim and Racquet Club boasts a great private pool and top-class clay and composition tennis courts. Finally, the Prince George's Publick Playhouse has to be mentioned. Originally built as the Cheverly Theatre in 1947, this grand Deco structure was renovated in 1977, reopening as the Publick Playhouse and offering exciting live performing arts. There have been two subsequent state of the art upgrades, while staying true to the original Deco architecture.
