This is an area that has received a lot of attention in recent years. The reasons have much to do with the rapidly evolving landscape of the nation’s capital, as centrally located neighborhoods continually revitalize and subsequently soar out of many buyers’ price range. Enter Carver Langston, an urban community somewhat on the fringe that hadn’t previously been considered prime real estate. With a stockpile of early 20th century row houses and older apartment buildings that can convert to condos for sale, this historic community is making positive news again.

Carver was named for the legendary black inventor George Washington Carver while Langston gets its name from John Mercer Langston, an influential abolitionist, U.S. Congressman and attorney. Both neighborhoods were residentially developed during the same period in time, beginning in the early 1920s. Row houses from that era tend to favor simple two-story porch front designs, with later models from the 1930 and 1940s eschewing the porches and presenting an even plainer brick look.  Apartment buildings were similarly unadorned, although some presented interesting neo-Deco detailing along the rooflines.

While there are still some short sales and foreclosures to be found in the area, Carver Langston is striving to catch up to the rest of the city. The close proximity to the H Street Corridor and the Atlas District to the west, along with the H Street-Benning Road electric street car line that is being constructed is helping spur the new transitioning trend. In fact, Carver Langston is sometimes referred to simply as H Street NE. Developers have been helping fuel the new trend in the area with recent projects such as the Atlas Lofts and the Flats at Atlas.

With the U.S. National Arboretum on its northern border and the Anacostia River greenbelt along the east, this is a community with an intriguing locale. Add nearby Gallaudet University and the Atlas Arts & Entertainment District within walking distance, and it’s not hard to see why affordable homes, townhouses, row houses and condos for sale in Carver Langston are on the upswing.
