Bungalow Style Homes in Washington DC Metro Area

What's one of the mostly commonly heard real estate terms in the Washington Metro marketplace? Bungalow. Just one word but it's powerful one, conjuring up a myriad of images depending on its use. Most commonly the term bungalow is preceded by “charming” which brings to mind some perfectly cute smallish house with a porch. Or, you might see a “fixer-upper” bungalow which could means considerable savings or even a “foreclosure” bungalow which brings to mind the notion of tearing down the little bugger and replacing it with something nice and big.

Okay, so what's the actual definition of a bungalow? Again, it's not finite. The term originated in India for small one-story dwellings and was later used Great Britain and the United States, often describing single or one and a half-story homes with wide verandas. In Washington Metro, bungalows are often synonymous with Craftsman cottages although not exclusively so. Still, if there's one typical image it's usually that of a predominantly single-story detached home with a room at the top and accompanying dormer jutting out from a sloping roof. Bungalow Style Homes in Washington DC Metro AreaBungalows in the Washington Metro area may evoke an era and image but they're no longer simply what the name implies. Whether they began as kit homes or were the result of developers, they were usually modest and affordable to begin and possessed of a highly adaptable structure. That one small room at the top can be expanded to include a den or additional bedroom. You can customize the kitchen and perhaps build another wing on the side. Before you know it your cottage is a castle. Too much you say? Still desiring the purity of a charming dollhouse bungalow? There's certainly that option as well. Just know that cute small little single-family homes for sale in a hot real estate market tend to get bigger over a period of time.

So what is the state of the traditional bungalow in Washington Metro? In a word, evolving. There are still older neighborhoods across the region that are economically lagging or on the cusp of revitalization. Here, bungalows can still be had for a reasonable price and can represent a terrific opportunity for renovation, value growth or simply good living. On the other side of the coin are classic restored bungalow homes in sought-after neighborhoods with prices moving into the seven-figure range. From modest means to upscale living, the Washington bungalow remains a buzzword.
