Popular Del Ray in Alexandria, Where Everybody Knows Your Name.

Del Ray Real Estate in Alexandria, VA
Just northwest of Old Town Alexandria is a small, highly walkable neighborhood that has soared in popularity in recent years. Del Ray dates back to the late 1880’s and offers a combination of small-town charm and modern convenience. Here you’ll find small shops, sidewalk cafes, coffee shops and a Giant Food market, along with a variety of properties for sale, from charming and often quirky single family homes, to older brick multiunit buildings.
Del Ray was originally planned as a grid of six streets running east-to-west and five streets running north-to-south. It hasn’t changed all that much in scope, although typical to the area, the outskirts have expanded. The center of town is where you’ll find the most activity, however, with neighbors and pedestrians dotting Mount Vernon Avenue and its specialty food stores, boutiques and locally-owned coffee houses. One of the most popular attractions is the Del Ray Farmer’s Market, which, in keeping with the community itself, is fairly small and quaint with vendors offering fresh meats, cheeses, fruit, baked items and other delights.
When it comes to Del Ray real estate in Alexandria, VA, condos and townhouses begin around $350,000, with single family homes extending into the upper six-figure range. Del Ray is commonly associated with three and four-bedroom Craftsman-style bungalows with a smaller upper level. Many of these homes have added full dormers to extend the second-story master suites, and most have generous front porches and gabled roofs. To a lesser degree, you’ll also find Victorians, Cape Cods and even some Dutch Colonials. Homes in Del Ray tend to be on smallish, well-maintained lots with walkways to the street.
Why has Del Ray become so popular? It’s a combination of factors—the proximity to Old Town, convenient commuter options (the Braddock Road Metro and nearby Capital Beltway), the proliferation of successful merchant businesses and of course, the thoroughly charming homes. The neighborhood hasn’t always been so hip and gentrified—a couple decades ago it was the kind of place where you might think twice about walking at night. That’s long since passed however. Del Ray is now the quintessential community where everybody knows your name.
