The neighborhood was named for Barcroft who died in 1895. The earliest homes in the area were built in 1892 but residential development didn't begin in earnest until in 1903. The pace picked up between 1918 and 1950, with the construction of several hundred homes in a variety of styles.

While it shares a name and historical references with the upscale Lake Barcroft community located in Fairfax County, Barcroft is its own place.
