Ballston Homes For Sale in Arlington VA

Ballston is a neighborhood in Arlington, Virginia, situated at the crossroads of N. Glebe Road and Wilson Boulevard, once known as Ball's Crossing. One of Northern Virginia's earliest crossroads, it was named after the Ball family (Mary Ball Washington was the mother of George Washington). As one of the larger neighborhoods in the area at 2.25 square miles, Ballston is home to some 12,319 residents. The high population density is partially due to the number of multi-unit structures and in fact, the majority of properties for sale are condominiums. More About Ballston Homes and Condos For Sale

Ballston Condos For Sale in Arlington VAThe crossroads that were so formative to Ballston's development date back to 1740. While there were early farms and homes in the area, there was not a notable amount of residential development until around 1900 by which point the Central Ballston neighborhood had been established. Homes built between the turn of the century and 1940 were often Craftsman-style, late Victorians and Colonial, including some townhouses. These older homes make up the majority of the single-family home stock in the area.

That said, there's a lot more condos for sale in Ballston these days than detached houses. This is largely due to a confluence of commercial development, urbanization and a strong retail presence. Much of this occurred along what is now known as the Ballston-Rosslyn Corridor which includes communities such as Clarendon and Courthouse

In 1951 the Parkington Shopping Center opened in Ballston, with a parking garage advertised as the largest in the country. The area around the crossroads became a major retail hub but eventually deteriorated with encroaching urban decay. In 1980, Arlington County accepted the Ballston Sector plan, aimed at transforming the area into a new downtown in Arlington. Ballston Common Mall opened in 1986, located at 4238 Wilson Blvd. This was the beginning of a sustained and successful transformation in the area, including the ongoing construction of a number of high-rise condos.

Today, Ballston is a thriving urban community featuring new mixed-use projects that combine retail, office and residential use. This latest model emulates the 'live, work and play' model that has become so popular across the river in downtown Washington DC. Homes for sale in the neighborhood enjoy a median sales price of $423,700, the vast majority of which are condos, including a number of lofts. The Ballston-MU (Marymount University) Metro Station is one of the busiest in Arlington and there also a wealth of roadways for motorists, including nearby I-66.
