The Bailey Crossroads neighborhood underwent a massive commercial and residential development boom in the 1960's and '70's in anticipation of a metro rail expansion that never came to fruition. The most notable result was the building of Skyline City, a cluster of 26-story office and apartment buildings. Subsequent economic decline resulted in in the neighborhood's inclusion as one of seven commercial districts targeted for redevelopment. The Baileys Crossroads revitalization efforts are part of a long-term sustainable growth model that stretches along the Columbia Pike corridor.
Despite the pockets of existing high-rise apartments and condos, the real estate market in Baileys Crossroads has been largely driven by single-family home sales. Values have been on a somewhat volatile pattern since the 2008 national real estate downturn with an overall upward trend. Most recently however, prices have again dropped. There isn't a large inventory at present and anticipation of revitalization initiatives may be factoring into the present holding trend.
Baileys Crossroads experienced a notable single-family home construction boom during the post-World War II years. Architectural styles typically include Colonial, Cape Cod, Rambler and contemporary. There has also been a recent rise in custom built construction. The coming years could significantly alter the landscape with long range plans for a town center-style neighborhood with tree-lined streets, upscale shops and mixed-used residential buildings and townhouses. For now Bailey's Crossroads continues to be a pleasant community featuring the largest of the Giant Food supermarkets, government contractors and a wide range of real estate prices.
